Can someone explain the point of foxtails to me? Are they purely decorative or do they serve any use?

I used to have a fox. One day he died. His fur was used to make a scarf for my mum. It’s nice to see he stayed in the family. Should I try to find what we did with his tail and wear it? (I don’t think so, though.)
